Volume III, Issue VIII

KEYWORDS:

We have very anxious and trying days ahead of us as we move swiftly to our annual recital. But, we also have other events upcoming that will be exciting and rewarding as well. There will be two major recital rehearsals that will require all students to be present,  an awards program for all the students, the selling of raffle tickets for our scholarship fund, the selling of ads for our program booklet, DVD's, the end-of-year event, and many announcements concerning costumes, accessories, hairdos and makeup.  All parents need to be aware of all the things listed so please give your full attention and cooperation during this busy time. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE SO PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE NEWSLETTER FOR ALL PERTINENT AND NECESSARY INFORMATION.

ADS

It is my belief that all students should be congratulated for their hard work, so I am asking all parents who don't want to congratulate their children to ask their grandparents, aunts, uncles or friends to congratulate them instead. Don't just ignore the fact altogether.  I AM EXTENDING THE ADS DEADLINE TO MAY 18, 2013 IN ORDER FOR YOU TO DO THIS. You will have to use your own pictures for your ads, as the photographer will not have the individual pictures ready in time, only the group pictures. Please do not hold your ads until the deadline date as I will need more time to get them ready in time for the printer. Since my surgery I can not use my right arm and hand very well yet, and I need more time. I do not want them to all come in at the last minute because that is too much for me to do all at once. Make sure your ads are legible so I do not have to re-write them, and the printer can read them.  EVERYONE GET BUSY AND DO A GOOD JOB BRINGING IN ADS. You should already be soliciting for ads by this time. Be sure to use your ads price to solicit for ads, especially the business card size ads, which has three levels: personal - $15.00; social/church/professional - $20.00; and business - $30.00. Some of you get that mixed up.

ADS C0NTEST

All students who are participating in the ads contest, need to make all your reports to Ms. Wilda, ONLY. All other ads can be turned in to the office. Winners will receive free dance lessons, not special dance classes. The prizes are full year, half year and one-third year free dance lessons.

DANCE FEES

We only have three months left in this dance year so everyone should strive to pay your dance fees on time during May, June and July.  The delinquent lists are always posted, so look at them and stay paid up. If your name appears on the list, it means you did not pay by the 15th of the month and the late fee is already included. If your name is constantly on the list, you are not trying to pay your fees. Any student who still owes on their recital fee will not be allowed to take pictures at the photo shoot or perform in the recital unless they are paid. I have been trying to do a dance calendar for the past few years, but I would rather have all the students on their class pictures so everyone will be included.

SCHOLARSHIP RAFFLE

Scholarship raffle tickets   are now for sale. All students are to sell at least 20 tickets each. The $20.00 should be paid in advance, which means you can not return any of the twenty tickets required. Any other tickets you get over the first twenty can be returned if you do not sell them. This raffle is the only way that we replenish our scholarship fund. The raffle is always held at the end of the recital program during announcements.

AWARDS PROGRAM

The awards program will be held at Trinity A.M.E. church at 2201 North 5th Street (5th & Greeley), Kansas City, Kansas on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at 3:00 p.m.  All students and teachers are required to be there. Every student will receive awards, certificates and t-shirts.
RECITAL REHEARSALS

Full-Day Rehearsal - Sat., June 1, 2013 - Studio - 9:30 A.M.

Half-Day Rehearsal - Sat., June 8, 2013 - Studio - 9:30 A.M.

Stage Rehearsal & Recital - Sat., June 15, 2013 - Music Hall - 9:00 A.M.

All students are required to be at these rehearsals. Please do not plan for your child to leave before the end of these rehearsals to go to birthday parties, slumber parties or any other social event. These rehearsals are important to the outcome of performances the night of the recital. It would be nice to know that the studio is not at the bottom of your bucket list on the important times.

DVD'S

Recital DVD's are not mandatory, but if you would like to purchase one, please pay and sign the list. The price is $30.00, the same as the last few years. We always need at least 15 people to get a contract for that price. The videographer will accept cash only. No checks will be accepted. You can sign the list up to recital night. The order list will be turned over to the videographer at the end of the program.

END-OF-YEAR EVENT

Our end-of-year event will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at the Power Play Entertainment Center, 13110 W. 62nd Terrace, Shawnee, Kansas, 913-268-7200. Our package consists of the one-time all-you-can-eat buffet, choice of  4 attractions of your choice (which you choose when you enter the Center),  and 40 points toward machine games. The choices of attractions you may select include: Cosmic Bowling, Go-Karts, Laser Tag, Lazer Maze, Bumper Cars, Ropes Course, and Tilt-a-Whirl. You may enjoy these 4 attractions as often as you like. Any other selections you choose will need to be paid by you. There is a Kids Zone for children 3 years and under where the little ones can play as long as they wish for $5.00. Parents should accompany them.

We will have lunch at the buffet from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. in the Field House Room right off from the buffet. We will have access to a screen and a microphone so we will be able to play a video or movie using a laptop during our meal time. Our event starts at 10:00 a.m. until you decide to leave. Our package is valued at $43.00, but our fee is $25.00 per person (adults and children). If someone wants to attend but do not want to play games, but wants to eat lunch, the fee is $6.99 for adults, and $4.96 for children, ages 4 to 12 years, at the buffet. All children 3 and under may eat free with a paying parent. We have several lists started. One for all dance students who will be attending, a list for the one-parent who will be attending, and a list of anyone who only wants to eat lunch and not play games. DO NOT GET ON A LIST UNLESS YOU ARE PAYING YOUR EVENT FEE. The deadline for all lists is Saturday, June 1, 2013. This is an indoor event, so weather will not be a factor. Invite your friends and/or family members and plan on having a fun day.

FYI

Everyone should try very hard to follow the rules, cooperate with all instructions from teachers, and do not ask for any favors. Pay what is asked of you on time, and make sure you read the entire April, May and June newsletters for all your information. If you have any questions, please see Ms. Wilda. With the load she has to carry now, it would not be fair to bombard her with things at the last minute. Please keep up with all upcoming dates and be present at all of them.

LEARN TO BE GRATEFUL

Be grateful for the kindly friends that walk along your way;
Be grateful for the skies of blue that smile from day to day;
Be grateful for the health you own, the work you find to do,
For round about you there are men less fortunate than you.

Be grateful for the growing trees, the roses soon to bloom,
The tenderness of kindly hearts that shard your days of gloom;
Be grateful for the morning dew, the grass beneath your feet,
The soft caresses of your babes and all their laughter sweet.

Acquire the grateful habit, learn to see how blest you are,
How much there is to gladden life, how little life to mar!
And what if rain shall fall today and you with grief are sad;
Be grateful that you can recall the joys that you have had!

DANCE QUOTE

Tips from Gregory Hines, famous tap dancer
Emulate expressive movement style by putting as much energy into your upper body as your feet, and try to eat up as much floor as possible.
Next time you're perfecting your tap solo, embody Hines' artistically adventuresome spirit. Play something unexpected or go a cappella.
When planning a tap routine, try thinking of your favorite moves from other styles. Adding a cabriole or even a layout can make your choreography exciting.
Practice improvising to make your routine flow by making bold, unplanned choices.
